Niemand not a nobody

The second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Johannesburg belonged to Jason Niemand of Border.

Niemand was named Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for an allround performance against Western Province. Niemand (131) recorded a century and boasted bowling figures of 2/38. He faced only 111 deliveries in his innings of which 14 was dispatched beyond the boundary rope. Three of these were maximums.

He and Sinethemba Qeshile (60) shared a 184-run partnership over the fourth wicket to help their team to 275/6. Both have represented the national u19-side in their careers.

Western Province just hanged on to secure a draw mostly thanks to Mihlali Mpongwana (33).

The only other century on the second day came off the bat of Francois Barnard of South Western Districts. Barnard struck 115 runs from 124 deliveries to help his side secure a victory on first innings against Namibia.

SWD’s fast bowler Jean Bruiner (4/30) also played a major part in the victory.

Mpumalanga’s spin bowler Faheem Nohami (5/32) picked up the only five-wicket haul of the second day as he kept Northern Cape’s batsmen guessing.

Free State’s batsmen had to show patience to secure a draw against Gauteng.

The hosts recorded 275/6 in their first innings thanks to some good batting by captain, Wandile Makwetu (91), Jacob Miltz (83) and Joshua Richards (52). Makwetu and Miltz shared a 152-run partnership over the third wicket.

Free State had to chase the total set or survive the 59 overs left. Garnett Tarr (33, 73b), CP Klijnhans (25, 68b), Gerald Coetzee (28, 89b) and Ruan Cronjé (12*, 55b) frustrated Gauteng’s bowling attack just enough to secure the draw.

Curtis Campher (4/16) and Kgaudisa Molefe (3/42) almost managed to secure the victory for the hosts.

The national u19-player Jade de Klerk and Tiaan Van Vuuren helped Eastern Province to a first innings victory over KwaZulu-Natal Inland with allround performances.

Van Vuuren was the pick of his side’s bowlers with figures of 3/25 and scored the most runs with the 54 runs that came off his bat.

De Klerk picked up three wickets for only 33 runs and added an unbeaten 39 runs with the bat in hand.

Northerns was the only team to secure an outright win on the opening day, but found themselves struggling against Boland on the second day.

Boland recorded 199 in their first innings, but had Northerns struggling at 84/7 before the latter had no other choice but to declare. Boland however still managed to secure a victory on the first innings.

Seamer Samuel Henderson (4/24) caused Northerns’ batsmen the most problems. He achieved some excellent help from Achille Cloete (3/11) from the other end.

For Northerns it was only Francois van Heerden with scores of 30 and 51 whom managed to resist Boland’s onslaught.
