Oosthuizen hero for Westville with century on opening day
Westville Boys’ High’s opening batsman Jared Oosthuizen (102) was the star of the opening day of the second annual Noord-Suid T20-competition in Pretoria as his century helped his school to a walloping nine-wicket victory.
Oosthuizen smashed his century from only 47 deliviers dispatching 17 past the boundary rope. Four of these boundaries at Villagers were maximums.
Oosthuizen shared a 150-run opening partnership with Daniel Trevathan (87) to set-up the convincing nine-wicket victory. Trevathan lost his wicket after being caught and bowled by Lohard Janse van Rensburg (1/35).
Centurion proved that they won’t just be rolling over as they defeated Rondebosch Boys’ High by 21 runs in their opening match.
Captain and opening batsman, Ryan Salomon (41), top scored as his team reached a modest 146/9 in their allotted overs. Rondebosch’s Guy Sheena caused most of the damage with an impressive 4/12 return in his four overs.
Rondebosch’s captain, Lehan Botha (65), and Keegan Mountjoy (40) shared a 107-run partnership over the second wicket and it seemed as the team from Cape Town would cruise home.
Nathan Wentzel trapped Botha leg before and was spearheading the comeback for Centurion as he grabbed three wickets for a mere 14 runs in three overs. Conrad Mouton (4/20) also caused problems for Rondebosch Boys’ High’s middle order batsmen.
Grey College of Bloemfontein will also be contenders this year after opening their account with a 43-run victory over a tricky Hoërskool Rustenburg side.
Grey reached a massive 227/7 in their 20 overs thanks to half-centuries by Marco de Kock (68) and Willie Pretorius (62*). De Kock and Juandré Kellerman (31) laid the foundation with an 85-run opening partnership.
Pretorius was devastating with the bat as he faced only 26 deliveries in his unbeaten knock. He smashed seven sixes as Rustenburg’s bowlers had no answer to send him packing.
Rustenburg’s dangerman and opening batsman Estiaan Schonfeldt got his team of to a great start hitting 66 runs from only 31 deliveries. He struck seven fours and five sixes in his innings.
SACS managed to beat Cornwall Hill College by 24 runs thanks to an opening partnership of 125 runs by Daniel Smith (70) and Kai Curren (58).
Kieran Rust (64) also managed to record a half-century for Cornwall Hill College.
