SA U19s clinch thrilling first win in Youth ODI series
The Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s overcame Afghanistan under-19s in an exciting nine-run victory in their third match of the Youth One-Day International (ODI) Quadrangular Series in Trivandrum on Saturday. The triumph is the first for the visitors, on the tour of the subcontinent.
Marco Jansen produced a superb return of 4/23 inspiring the youngsters to an impressive display with the ball and restricting their opponents to 191 in the penultimate over despite Farhan Khan’s half-century. This was after Bryce Parsons (40), Luke Beaufort (40) and Andile Mogakane (38) helped South Africa to 200 all out in 49.5 overs.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Parsons and Beaufort combined for a 57-run, fourth-wicket partnership that helped rebuild the South African innings following a trio of early wickets.
Despite suffering a middle-order collapse at the hands of Reyaz Hassan (3/26) and Shafiqullah Ghafari (2/24), Mogakane found reliable lower-order partners in Achille Cloete (10) and Kgaudise Molefe (13) to propel their side from 165/8 to a competitive total.
Arif Dawlatzai (2/39), Abid Mohammadi (2/29) and Fazal Farooqi (1/45) were the other wicket-takers for the Afghanistan outfit.
Tasked with defending their highest score of the tour thus far, the Matthew Montgomery-led side bowled well up front to restrict the scoring rate. Cloete (2/45) claimed two early wickets, while Jansen picked up one of his own to leave Afghanistan on 29/3 after 6.3 overs. Khan and Hassan then put on 88 runs for the fourth-wicket, shifting the momentum in their favour and helping them to 117/3 before the latter was dismissed for 35 by Nonelela Yikha (1/46).
Afghanistan’s captain went on to reach a deserved fifty, recording 63 off 95 balls (4 fours, 1 six) before Player of the Match, Bryce Parsons made further inroads in the middle period. The bowler removed Khan and then followed it up with the scalp of Dawlatzai (18).
Those two strikes looked to have slowed down the Afghanistan batsmen, with more good bowling from South Africa’s attack ensuring the contest goes the distance before Jansen then took it upon himself to grab the match by the scruff. The tall left-arm seamer added three more wickets to his name, including two in the 49th over, following a run-out by Molefe in the previous one to seal the hard-fought result after his side defended 36 off the last 10 overs.
Scorecards can be located on www.cricinfo.com. The South Africans will take on Afghanistan U19s in Monday’s, (11 March) third-place playoff at the St Xavier’s Cricket Ground. India U19s ‘A’ will compete against their ‘B’ side in the Youth ODI Quadrangular series final after the latter stunned their opponents in the final round-robin clash on Saturday by three wickets.
